Erikson is probably my favorite psychologist of them all. He discussed the human ego in set of 8 life stage virtues: hope, will, purpose, competence, fidelity, love, caring, and wisdom. He also believed that integrity and despair must be understood and embraced in order to achieve that realm of wisdom. For some reason, I kind of always thought of him as a Buddhist like psychologist, rather than a Neo-Freudian psychologist.
